Multiple Strategy Instruction
Multiple Strategy Instruction refers to those instructional practices that teach several reading strategies simultaneously (NICHD, 2000). By learning multiple strategies at once, students learn to become strategic readers. Howard Gardner taught us that people learn in a variety of ways. If this is true, teaching should be catered to find the way each student learns. Multiple Strategy Instruction ask students to learn a flexible repertoire of strategies that they can apply when reading challenging text. The key is for students to learn and practice the strategies so they become automatic.

The PLAN (Predict, Locate, Add, Note) strategy guides students in using concept mapping to identify information that is known and information that is new from the text (Caverly, Mandeville, & Nicholson, 1995). PLAN allows the teacher to cover four strategies at once. By doing this, the student becomes more of an active and strategic learner.
