ScaffoldingScaffolding is a way of introducing a strategy of learning. The term scaffolding (Wood, Bruner, & Ross 1976) describes learning situations that are "socially mediated," with one person carefully supporting another with new learning (Vygotsky, 1978). At first, the teacher is responsible for demonstrating the strategy, and then they gradually release responsibility for using the strategy to the student (Miller & Veatch, 2011). There are 3 parts to the process: Modeled Practice, Guided Practice, and Independent Practice. The process begins by students witnessing an example provided by the teacher (Modeled Practice), then the students repeat the strategy on their own with the assistance of the teacher (Guided Practice), and ultimately performing the strategy on their own (Independent Practice), which is the goal of the process.
